My Love of Dark Colors

    Clare O'Neill Artwork

It’s Part of Who I am.

It’s no surprise that I love dark and muted colors, all you have to do is look at my wardrobe. But I love the sense of comfort and security I get from wearing them.

So naturally, my paintings are comprised of dark, neutral, and muted tones.

I love the Interplay of a muted color palette. I find them intriguing and captivating and to me they elicit a contemplative and emotional response.

I’m in love with stark and mysterious landscapes—the ones that are devoid of rich bright colors and continually find myself drawn to neutral ochres/grays/whites/browns/deep blues and all the colors that are almost black.

I love the light and dark colors as they transition in the landscape. I’m fascinated with the idea of edges—where something stops, and another begins. The tension energizes me.

Over the years some of my bright color loving friends have tried to convince me to add more color to my work, but every time I do, I’m not happy with the piece.

In my mind bright colors often steal the show. Whereas neutral colors allow for a subtle and nuanced flow. I love how an earth-toned color palette allows the mind to mingle with different interpretations within a piece of work.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks finishing the details for the 2024 Ireland photo adventure and have been looking at a lot of my Ireland images. I’ve realized that although so many people think of Ireland as green and lush, I’m always drawn to Connemara and the regions that have more muted tones.

Ireland is part of my story. It’s home to me. My connection with the land is deep. I’ve had some time recently to contemplate my history, story, and who I am as an artist.

And I’m an artist that loves a muted color palette. I’m always drawn to them and love working with their timeless appeal. These colors have an ability to captivate and inspire my self-expression, making them an essential part of my life and personal style.

    With all good wishes,
