Inspiration

I was that kid who goes into a fabric store and runs their hands across all the fabrics and yarns relishing in all the different textures.  I’m fascinated by simple patterns that have dramatic impact. I love the intricate movement of color in all things old—whether that be a cement wall, rusted car, or moss growing along a stream.  There is a history and a sense of belonging that settles in to people and places with a story to tell.  I’m drawn to neutrals and muted colors which are devoid of rich bright color, which tend to steal the show.  It’s in these neutral and muted colors where my mind is allowed to mingle with different interpretations and subtle transitions.

I know what it feels like to have a chaotic busy life where I spend too much time on unimportant things and not enough on the simple pleasures. Over time I’ve become a minimalist and surround myself with things and people that energize and inspire me. I’m inspired by spaces that are beautiful and calming, with loads of texture and complexity.

Clare O’Neill is a Minneapolis based artist whose work is created by slowly building up a surface with multiple layers—using bold brush strokes and playful drips to create backgrounds full of gesture, spontaneity, and motion. Her work is large, so the photographs are printed on tissue paper in multiple pieces, and then carefully embedded into the layers of hot beeswax.
